Since Skype first promised background VoIP, this is the Skype update we have all been waiting for. The Skype 2.0.1 update, will now run in the background, on any iPhone, as long as it has been updated to iOS4. Launch it, leave it running, and it’ll function just like your AT&T account — as long as the incoming call is from a Skype account.
It also means that you’ll be able to switch the screen off or mess around with other apps on your iPhone while gabbing away on Skype.
This means that Skype users can now receive Skype calls and instant messages while other apps are running or the iPhone is locked. As with the iPhone’s Phone app, you can continue your call while you switch to another application.
The update is free, and those who are already using the app should see an update appearing in iTunes on their iPhones soon.
As for iPad support, please remember that, according to Skype’s Asia-Pacific VP Dan Neary, Skype for iPad was set to come out “this summer”. Maybe the app has been delayed? Summer’s not over yet, but we haven’t had official word about the app since then.
